There are three main reasons why I’m running for School Board.
First, we owe it to the children to provide them the best education possible. Without having metrics to measure the effectiveness of The Germantown Way, how do we know how we doing as a district or how our students are performing? I like the concept of working on something that we can control and adjust over time so that our students are prepared for their future, but we need to define those so we know how we are doing.
Second, we owe it to the parents to provide open communication and meet their expectations. Parents want to know that their children are being prepared for life after high school. In combination with The Germantown Way metrics, we need to provide more information to current (and future parents) and guidance around what they should expect that their children will be learning about all along the way.
Lastly, we owe it to the taxpayers to manage the money that is provided to the District in a responsible manner. Approving the annual budget where projected costs exceed expected revenues since the 2015/2016 budget year is not fiscally conservative. Taking on additional non-referendum debt at the same time the referendum was approved, is not fiscally conservative. Drawing down the fund balance to $3.5 million and now scrambling to close a projected 2021/2022 budget shortfall of $2.5 million is not fiscally conservative. We need to get our financial house in order. Transparency and accountability are key here. We need to focus and address this issue immediately so we can balance taxpayer expectations and still provide quality student experiences.
