My answer to "What do you believe is the role of the school district regarding student mental health?" from the Germantown Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum:
While students are in our buildings we have an obligation to pay attention to the signs of mental health and, depending on exactly what might be happening, take the right course of action to address the situation.
However, I believe that we cannot be relied upon as the “primary caregiver” for mental health care. I feel strongly that we need to be proactive if and when we feel there is a mental health situation that we suspect or know about.
Parents have the absolute right to know about what we may be seeing happening with their students at school.
As difficult as these various situations are, we must partner with parents and students to assist in helping, where we can, to get the necessary support in place.
