Importance of School Safety and What I Support: Part 2

The second part of this two-part series will be focused on the second major school safety item that I supported. I’ll also identify what my commitment is going forward on school safety.

The second safety item was the adoption of the School Safety Officer job description. Our school resource officers already do such a great job in working with our building staff and our students. It’s a position that provides an invaluable service for us. However, we felt that there was a need to provide additional resources to help protect our buildings. The board approved, and I supported, the job description for the School Safety Officer in September 2022. This position was created to provide an additional layer of support in school safety at the elementary school level.

I strongly believe that a multi-layer approach to school safety is paramount, but also should also minimize the impact on our students on a day-to-day basis. I believe that we have a strong plan in place, but we cannot assume that we have all our bases covered.

We still need support in implementing these additional safety measures so my commitment to this community is to continue to advocate for additional assistance and resources from the state level so that we, and potentially other districts, can do the things that we believe are most important to ensure that our students are in a safe environment.

Something that might differentiate me from the others in this race is the fact that I do believe that the board has the responsibility to advocate for our school district to our legislature and governor. Certainly, there is a chance that what we say may fall on deaf ears, however, if the community sees that we are trying to accomplish something, and they also feel strongly about the topic, they can help. To do otherwise would be taking the posture of “I guess what happens will happen.” That’s not leadership.
