Importance of School Safety and What I Support: Part 1

One of the items I want to keep working on when reelected is to continue to improve our school safety plan.

I’m breaking this topic down into two parts because there are two key parts to what we have done and what we will need to do going forward.

We all know about the tragic events that occurred at Kennedy Middle School on the evening of October 23. Fortunately, none of our students or other community members who happened to be in the building at the time were physically injured. In the joint press conference after the event, Chief Snow praised the student's response to the incident in doing exactly what they should’ve done based on the training that the District does regularly.

I have been the Buildings & Grounds Committee Chairman since the start of my first term. That committee has oversight for much of the safety precautions that are in place the protect our students and staff. I also have three children. One who attends Germantown High School and  2 who go to Kennedy Middle School so I understand how important it is to send my kids to a safe environment.

I appreciate our current implementation of safety measures, as many student's families can, after what had occurred at kMS that evening during the critical police incident. My family was personally impacted that evening, as many of our friends and neighbors were too.

There are a couple of safety-related items that the board approved that I supported that happened in the last couple of years. This first post will focus on the School Safety Resolution.

I voted in favor of the School Safety Resolution that was introduced in July 2022. I believe that we need to look at every aspect of how we protect our schools. The resolution and all the items listed were meant to provide many additional opportunities to consider not just for Germantown School District, but all of the school districts in Wisconsin. I’m fully aware that there may be some items within our resolution that people don’t agree with, and I respect that, however, I’m very confident that there are a couple of items that could get broad support to add to our safety plan. The concealed carry item was highlighted in the JS Online interview, because it’s a headline grabber, but I did mention that some of the items that, if we were able to move forward with them, would require a lot of input from all stakeholders, and quite a bit of work to implement.

In the next post, I'll cover the other important school safety-related item that I supported and what my commitment is going forward.
