I know that having our School Resource Officers are an important part of our District’s safety plan. Besides being onsite to provide whatever assistance and safety they can, it’s an opportunity for our students to interact with law enforcement so that they know how important their jobs are and to respect the work that they do.
As part of the multi-layer approach to protecting our students and staff, I was pleased to support Bob Soderberg’s proposal to consider a School Safety Officer(s) position in September 2022.
Although a School Safety Officer may not have prevented the events of October 23, 2023, it shows that even Germantown needs to be aware of and prepared for any threat to our schools. As I said during the discussion surrounding the School Safety Officer position, “As uncomfortable as it may be for me to have three kids, one at the high school, one at the middle school, and one at an elementary school to say this… we cannot assume it’s not going to happen here. That’s the wrong approach to it.”
Fortunately, none of our students or members of the community were physically injured that evening. I got to see, and interact with, parents gathered at MacArthur waiting for the kids to be brought back to them and experience it myself. That just heightened even more the importance of school safety for me and for the District.
I’m committed to continuing to investigate, research, and consider all possible measures to keep our students and staff safe.
