Candidate Forum Question: Training Staff on Cultural Awareness

From the March 23rd Candidate Forum: Q: How will you train staff, administration, and anyone who works in the buildings about cultural awareness? How will you include the community on this journey to becoming a more accepting place?

TP: I think we need to approach training our staff as a process. I’m a Product Manager and how I would approach this would be to identify and define the goal – cultural awareness (and its definition) and identify and measure the steps that we would need to achieve that goal. Perform. Measure. Recalibrate. Repeat.

Because it’s a process, we need to show progress. When we show progress, we can be assured we are moving in the right direction or adjust to realign to working towards the goal. When we are moving in the right direction, we can be assured that people are noticing us. And, related to the question of diversity in our district, when people notice us, we will attract the best talent from every different background.
